Where Did Ortman Farms Start and Who Are We?
Ortman Farms is a family-owned and operated farm located in the beautiful St. Lawrence Valley of Northern New York. Over the years, we have evolved into the dairy, pork, and beef farm we are today—while staying true to our core values.
We take pride in producing high-quality products and providing ethical, respectful care for our animals. In fact, naming every animal is a long-standing family tradition and a reminder of the responsibility we honor every day. Our animals play an essential role in our livelihood, and they are treated with the care and respect they deserve. Our connection to the land runs just as deep. We understand that healthy land is the foundation of a successful farm.
Ortman Farms began with humble beginnings and a dream. In 1977, Loren Ortman purchased 166 acres of snow-covered land in Upstate New York—right in the heart of winter. Inspired by his grandparents' farm and his lifelong love of the land, Loren saw potential where others saw frozen ground. At the time, he balanced farming with a full-time job as a newspaper foreman in New Jersey. By 1981, Ortman Farms officially began as a small vegetable, sheep, and replacement heifer farm. Loren and his wife Cynthia raised their three children on the farm, growing together with the land.
On January 16, 1999, the family took a major leap of faith and transitioned to a full-time dairy farm. Starting with just nine dairy cows, two pail units, and a dumping station, Loren proudly shipped their very first load of milk—950 pounds. More than two decades later, the dairy has grown to 74 milking cows, producing an average of 7,500 pounds, a remarkable increase from that first shipment.
In 2016, Ortman Farms expanded again by developing a beef herd to provide pasture- and grain-fed meat directly to consumers. Today, the farm includes dairy, beef, pork, lumber, and cropping, continuing to evolve while staying grounded in tradition.
With the addition of their son Michael as an official partner in Ortman Dairy, LLC in 2019, Ortman Farms truly represents a multi-generation, family-run operation.
